The History of Breitling Watches
The Breitling Company has existed for more than 12 decades following the establishment of a manufactory of chronographs and precision counters aimed at the scientific and industrial development. The Swiss founder of the company was Leon Breitling.
After the death of Leon Breitling in 1914, the company passed to his son Gaston who created a wristwatch chronograph. Ten years later, Breitling created the first independent chronograph push piece.
Willy Breitling, the son of Gaston, took over management of the company in 1932. At this point there began one of the most successful stories in watchmaking industry. In 1936, Breitling signed the agreement with the Royal Air Force and became its official supplier. In 1942, the company extended its customers list with the American Armed Forces.
The year 1954 witnessed the invention of the Navitimer, a wrist mechanism with the famous navigation computer. This super chronograph became a favorite among pilots in the entire world. By that time, Breitling was supplying the major international airlines with aircraft pulpit clocks. In 1962, Astronaut Scott Carpenter wore the Cosmonaute chronograph during his orbital flight on the board of the Aurora 7 space capsule.
In 1969 Breitling introduced the first self winding chronograph. This technical device was a major achievement for the entire Swiss watchmaking industry. In 1984, the Chronomat was launched, representing a return of the chronograph. It immediately became a best-seller among the timepieces of the Breitling collection.
In the 1990s, Breitling introduced its Emergency collection with a built-in micro transmitter targeted at the aircraft emergency industry. The followed B-1 all-round multifunctional chronograph was developed in tight cooperation with aviation professionals.
The beginning of the 21st century saw introduction of the most accurate quartz system for that time. Improving every year, SuperQuartz positioned itself as a quartz benchmark for watchmaking industry. These days, its electronic movements are the only ones able to meet the strict COSC standard requirements.
Breitling Chronometrie is still established in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the town where Leon Breitling opened his first chronograph factory 110 years ago, with a headquarter of Breitling Company in Grenchen, Switzerland that was established in 2000.
