New TAG Heuer Link Calibre S - Electro-Mechanical Wonder

TAG Heuer required more than four years to develop, patent, and manufacture the recently introduced Calibre S movement. The latest movement of the brand was initially presented at BaselWorld 2007. The unique characteristics of the new Link Calibre S surprised the entire world of horology.

The innovative Link Calibre S belongs to a new generation of electro-mechanical movements, also called 'hybrid', implying neither quartz nor automatic mechanisms. These are the successful union of mechanical sophistication and quartz precision.

The Link Calibre S comprises 230 complex mechanical components and five bi-directional micro-engines, mechanically independent yet synchronized. The innovative movement is of far more complicated nature than a common quartz movement comprising 30-40 component. Simply speaking, the Calibre S represents a mechanical movement providing the precision of quartz.

The Link Calibre S shows the time of hours, minutes and seconds. By pressing the crown, the chronograph function is switched on. The same central hands reverting to zero are used for starting and stopping the timing by pressing the chronograph pushbuttons positioned traditionally at 2 and 4 o'clock.

The Link Calibre S has been suggested by automotive dashboard counters. It sports two retrograde semi-circular counters placed at 4.30 and 7.30 responsible for displaying 1/10th and 1/100th of a second when the chronograph function is activated. After pressing the crown once again, the timepiece is reverted to the standard time function - the two particular displays become the perpetual retrograde calendar till 2099 without no need for date adjustment. The three central hands are switched to the standard timing function and indicate the current time and date.

The five high-performance bi-directional engines the revolutionary Calibre S movement is equipped with are able to provide twice the torque of common timepiece engines. The launch of the innovative mechanism has become a major event in Swiss watchmaking circles, following the steps of the one-of-a-kind belt-driven mechanical movement presently produced for the Monaco TAG Heuer V4.

The Link Calibre S watch is housed in a 42-mm stainless steel case. The TAG Heuer watch possesses a really distinctive look enhanced with the immediately recognizable Link bracelet, equipped with the folding clasp and buckle. The curved scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is provided with double-sided anti-reflection treatment.

The masculine dial of the timepiece sports hand-applied curved and facetted indexes, luminescent markers and facetted polished hands. The fixed bezel demonstrates a black tachymeter scale. The case back offers the set-up instructions for hour and date initialization. The watch boasts 200-meter water-resistance.
