Omega and Olympics

Omega Keeps the Records Running

The Presentation of the Commemorating PosterOmega is not just one of the most famous letters of the Greek alphabet, but it is also the name of one of the most famous watch brands. The letter itself is the symbol of the brand. The symbol means accomplishment and perfection - two properties Omega strives at. It is no wonder that James Bond always chooses an Omega as his "official timekeeper".

The statistic shows that 7 of 10 people have at least once heard about the watch brand. Certainly this happens because of the fact that omega has already been the Olympic timekeeper for 22 times and every sport lover on the world has at least subconsciously seen the Omega logo on the stadium panels.

However Omega is not going to stop on the figure '22'. After succeeding in Torino 2006 Winter Olympics Omega announced that the partnership between them and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not come to an end at least until 2012. That year, when London will house Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, Omega plans to become the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games for the 25th time in the history. In 2012 this will be the 80 years' anniversary since Omega began timing the athletes' starts at Olympic Games. The first games timed by Omega took place in 1932 in LA.

Jacques Rogge (IOC President) and Nick Hayek (Swatch Group CEO) have announced the event back in May, when Omega has opened its next boutique at the Royal Exchange in London.

The Omega President Stephen Urquhart presented Sebastian Coe (British Olympic Committee Official) a bronze bell from Omega. Such bells are used to signal the so-called "the beginning of the end", i.e. the start of the final lap of a race. Urquhart has also presented a poster to commemorate the Olympic Games in London back in 1948, which took place at Wembley Stadium.

It is also worth mentioning that Omega will keep the track of time also in 2008 in Beijing at the next summer Olympics and in 2010 at the winter Olympic Games at Vancouver.
